Promoted Stoke City unsurprisingly sit in the Barclays Premier League bottom three after six games but to say they have done so without making a statement of intent would be way off the mark.
A win against Aston Villa at home and a point secured at Anfield are already highlights of their season but even in their defeat to Everton, Stoke showed a fight that was proof that they aren't around to make up the numbers. And though Liverpool were lucky enough not to, both Aston Villa and Everton felt the bite of Stoke's goal threat. A bite that can be tracked back to midfielder Rory Delap's... Incredible throwing ability??! Yes! Rory Delap's incredible throwing ability!
You see when Delap was 14 he took up the javelin and without any coaching threw it a distance surpassing 40 metres. Though he admits his technique wasn't great, he's still certain he was a natural.
I was never trained to do the javelin, my technique was terrible. But you are just born with it sometimes
Now Delap is using his skills to catapult 35 metre long throw ins to his Stoke teammates that can fly like corner kicks at a speed of 37mph. The resulting pressure it has put on Stoke's opponents has proved it to be a priceless weapon in Stoke's quest for survival. Take a look at the damage he caused in Stoke City's 3-2 defeat at home to Everton.
